Your Journey From Ligament Injury to Return to Active Life

In our today’s blog, we will discuss about the types of ligament injuries, their grade, symptoms, healing time and their process of treatment. To start with let us first try to understand what is a ligament? These are flexible, tough tissues made of multiple fibres which connect a bone to the another. Ligament injury is most commonly observed in athletes. It might occur at any point of the sport. The most vulnerable points to ligament injury are knees and ankle as they are weight-bearing joints. It mostly takes place when the ligaments are strained or stressed beyond its normal range. The symptoms of ligament injury are:

  • Pain caused due to trauma
  • Severe swelling and sudden onset of pain
  • Joint instability
  • Impaired function such as difficulty in walking or running or bearing weight of the body.

The ligament injury is divided into three grades based on the complexity of tear as follows:

  • Grade I - mild ligament tear
  • Grade II - moderate ligament tear
  • Grade III - complete ligament tear

Types of Ligament Injury:

  • Knee ligament injury: ACL, PCL, MCL, LCL sprain, Poster lateral corner injury, patella dislocation, superior tibiofibular joint sprain.
  • Ankle ligament injury: Sprained ankle and high ankle sprain
  • Shoulder ligament injury: AC joint injury, and dislocated shoulder
  • Wrist and hand ligament injury: Thumb sprain and finger sprain
  • Spinal ligament injury: Back ligament sprain, neck sprain, text sprain, and whiplash.

Treatment of ligament injury:

The treatment of ligament injury depends on the locality of severity of sprain. For example: Grade I sprain may get healed within a few weeks while grade II may take 6 to 12 weeks requiring the patient to use weight-bearing brace or supportive tapping as a part of initial treatment. Grade III ligament injury involves significant injury requiring the patient to consult an orthopedic surgeon to determine if a surgical procedure is required. Other treatment options include “Early injury treatment, Acupuncture and dry needling, Gait analysis, Walking boot, Brace or support, Heat packs, Electro and physiotherapy, Stretching and running exercises, medications and surgical procedures, if needed”.
